The list is by no means complete, containing just the basics for a beginner.
There are a lot of sailing terms that are no longer in use today, so even if you're taking sailing lessons, there is no need to learn them all. Some sailing terms, like "Captain's Daughter" date back from a few centuries back.
Beginner Sailing Terms
Above board - on the deck
Aboard - on board a ship
Bow - the front of the ship
Stern - the back of the ship
Port - left side of the ship
Starboard - right side of the ship
All hands - calling the entire crew of the ship
Anchorage - an area where the ship can doc (port, harbor)
Avast - command to stop the activity that is being done
Decks - horizontal areas of a ship, similar to flats in a building
Flank - maximum speed of a ship, even faster then "Full Speed"
Pilot - the navigator which guides the ship in difficult areas like harbors.
These terms will help you get familar with sailing before you even start to learn. This will help speed up the learning curve greatly
